Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa)
The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa) is one of the most revered religious and cultural landmarks in Sri Lanka. Located in the heart of Kandy, this UNESCO World Heritage Site houses a sacred tooth relic of Buddha, making it a significant pilgrimage site for Buddhists from around the world. The temple’s intricate architecture, adorned with golden canopies and traditional Kandyan designs, reflects the grandeur of Sri Lanka’s ancient craftsmanship. You can also witness daily rituals performed by monks, offering a glimpse into the spiritual traditions surrounding the relic.
The entrance ticket cost 2000 LKR (6,60 EUR) and it’s open every day from 5:30 – 20:00.
NOTE: Be cautious around the temple entrance, as many locals may approach you trying to sell scarves and sarongs, claiming you need to buy them to enter. This is false. The temple provides complimentary sarongs, so there’s no need to purchase them.
Esala Perahera Festival
If you visit in July or August, don’t miss the Esala Perahera Festival also also known as The Festival of the Tooth. It is one of Sri Lanka’s most spectacular cultural events. This grand procession features dancers, drummers, fire-breathers, and elephants adorned with lavish costumes, all in honour of the Sacred Tooth Relic.
Kandy National Museum
The Kandy National Museum, located near the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, provides a fascinating glimpse into Sri Lanka’s history and culture. Housed in a historic building that once served as a royal palace, the museum features a wide array of artifacts, including royal regalia, weapons, traditional costumes, and ceremonial items. The exhibits highlight the Kandyan Kingdom’s rich heritage and the influence of colonial powers. Kandy Lake
Kandy Lake, located in the heart of the city, offers a serene escape from the urban bustle. The shaded path surrounding the lake is ideal for a leisurely walk. You can also spot various bird species and enjoy the calming atmosphere or you can take a short boat tour around the lake. We also recommend you to stop at the “Kandy view point” from where you have the best and unobstracted view of the lake and the city.
Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya
The Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya, just outside Kandy, are beautiful lush gardens spanning over 147 acres. Renowned for their collection of more than 4,000 plant species, including vibrant orchids, towering palms, and exotic tropical flora, the gardens are a haven for nature lovers. You can stroll through beautifully landscaped pathways, admire the iconic giant Javan fig tree, and explore themed sections like the orchid house and medicinal garden.
The entrance ticket to the Botanical Gardens cost around 9 EUR and they are open every day from 7:30 – 17:00.
Kandy City Centre and Central Market
For shopping, visit Kandy City Centre, a modern mall with a mix of local and international brands. For a more traditional experience, head to Central Market, where you can buy spices, fresh produce, and handcrafted souvenirs.
Bahirawakanda Vihara Buddha Statue
The Bahirawakanda Buddha Statue, located on a hilltop overlooking Kandy, is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. This towering white Buddha statue, standing 26 meters tall, offers panoramic views of Kandy and its lush surroundings. You can climb up to the base of the statue to admire its serene expression and intricate design, as well as enjoy the peaceful ambiance of the temple grounds. A visit during sunset adds an enchanting glow to the experience, making it a must-see attraction in Kandy.
The entrance ticket cost 300 LKR (1 EUR) and it’s open from 6:00 – 18:00.
Udawattakele Forest Reserve

As the train winds through the central highlands, you can enjoy the dramatic landscapes, including waterfalls, valleys, and rolling hills. The 7 hour journey is a photographer’s dream, with every turn revealing a new breathtaking view. Whether you’re traveling to Ella or Nuwara Eliya, this train ride is a must-do experience that perfectly captures the beauty and tranquility of Sri Lanka’s hill country.
Tickets: The best tip I can give you is to book your ticket online at least one month ahead on 12goAsia.
If you try to book online with less than a month to go, you’ll likely find tickets sold out. This is because many travel agencies purchase tickets in bulk to resell them at a higher price.
Tickets on 12goAsia are already slightly more expensive than buying directly at the station, but the difference isn’t that much, and you’ll avoid the high risk of tickets being sold out on the day of departure. Alternatively, you can book on the official Sri Lankan Railway website, but tickets there are only available up to 30 days in advance and usually again sell out quickly due to bulk purchases by agencies.
If you can’t get tickets online but are staying in Kandy for a few days, head to the station in person a few days before your departure to try your luck. If tickets are unavailable, your options are:
- Buying from a travel agency but at a much higher price (many agencies operate on platforms like Get Your Guide).
- Trying your luck on the day of departure at the station.
Regardless of how you manage to get your ticket, we hope your journey goes smoothly. And one final note: please be cautious when hanging out of the train!”

Don’t leave Kandy without joining a true Sri Lankan cooking class. This class give you the chance to learn how to make traditional and authentic dishes like rice & curry, hoppers, coconut sambal and others using fresh, local ingredients. TRANSPORTATION
TUKTUK RENTAL
In our opinion, the best way to travel around Sri Lanka is with your own TukTuk! We have rented ours at https://tuktukrental.com. To drive around Sri Lanka, you will need a local Sri Lankan driving license called Sri Lankan Recognition Permit. Your international driver’s license unfortunately isn’t sufficient to drive here.
We got our license sorted by our tuktuk rental company. We sent them all the documents needed and they got it ready for us for an extra fee. Otherwise you have to go to Automobile Association of Ceylon located in Colombo and get the license there.
However from April 15th 2024 tourists are able to apply for the local Sri Lankan license directly at the airport after arrival.
NOTE: You can’t drive with a tuktuk on the highway (so make sure you set your google maps on “avoiding motorways”) and the maximum speed you can drive at is 40km/h. This means that when you are planning your drives, you have to add some extra time to the time it shows you on google maps. We have noticed that with a tuktuk it took us around 20min longer per each hour of the drive. So if google maps shows you 1h drive (car drive) it will be around 1h20min with a tuktuk. If it shows 2h, it will be around 2h40min and so on!
We were driving to Kandy from Sigiriya and it took us a little over 3 hours.
You could also rent a scooter if you don’t feel up for a tuktuk! You will still need to obtain the Sri Lankan driving permit though!
PRIVATE DRIVER
We understand that driving a tuktuk is not for everybody as it definitely can be stressful at times. If you want to travel around Sri Lanka completely stress-free we would recommend you to hire a private driver. If you would like to explore Sri Lanka with a professional private driver here is a contact on our local family friend Treshan (+94 77 354 2191). You can contact him via WhatsApp and plan your holidays together. He can take you and show you all around Sri Lanka so you will have the perfect hassle-free holidays!
Another perk of travelling with a local is that they aren’t just drivers but also tour guides! They know all the best spots, hidden gems and off the beaten path places. So other than all the tourist sites, Treshan can take you pretty much everywhere and show you places you’ve never heard of!
For taxi service the price is around 0,45$/km but of course if you want to plan the entire holiday with him so he takes you all around the island, you can work out an itinerary all together and make a final price. 0,45$/km is just a rough estimated price for you to have an idea.
PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION
Kandy is the second largest city in Sri Lanka and therefore it is well connected with the rest of the island. If you are coming from Colombo, you can reach Kandy by bus (4-5h) or by train (3-4h). If you are coming from Ella then we definitely suggest you to take the train as the train journey from Ella to Kandy is one of the most scenic in the world winding through lush tea plantations and misty mountains. If you are travelling from Sigiriya then you will need to take a bus to Dambulla and change there for Kandy.
There are also some buses going around the centre of Kandy and its surroundings so you can also use them to get around the city however we don’t think it’s convenient.
TAXI/TUKTUK
There are many taxis and tuktuks in Kandy so you definitely won’t have a problem to find one however we suggest you to be a little bit more careful in Kandy as we found more scams happening in Kandy than anywhere else in Sri Lanka. So agree on the price beforehand.
GROUP TOUR
If you are tight on time and want to make the most out of your time in Kandy in a shorter period of time, you can join a group tour. Here are some tours you can choose from:
BEST TIME TO VISIT
Even though Sri Lanka is an all year round destination, generally the best period to visit Kandy is between December and March. I said Kandy and not Sri Lanka, because thanks to the two different monsoons that hit the island, the country has inverted dry and rainy season between the two coasts.
So the best time to visit the west, the south and central Sri Lanka (including Kandy) is from December till March, while the best time to visit the east and the north is from April to September.
The most touristy part of the island with more things to visit is the west, the south and the central part of the island. So generally we would suggest to visit Sri Lanka from December-March. We have spent 1 month in Sri Lanka from January 11th until February 9th and only had 1 day of rain during the entire stay!
Alternatively if you are a cultural enthusiast, you could visit Kandy during its Esala Perahera Festival also known as The Festival of the Tooth which happens during the months of July and August.
CURRENCY
Sri Lanka has their own currency – Sri Lankan Rupee.
1 EUR = 319 LKR
1 USD = 297 LKR
1 GBP = 374 LKR
We used Bank of Ceylon (BOC) for all of our withdrawals, as it didn’t charge us any commission. But that also depends on your bank. We usually use Revolut when we travel outside EU.
We recommend you to carry cash with you everywhere, as you won’t always be able to pay with card.
TRAVEL INSURANCE
We recommend to book a travel insurance for every trip as you never know what could happen. It’s not easy to deal with any kind of problems when you are abroad, so it’s definitely worth it to be covered and travel with peace of mind.
